*** Email from Big Joe Bataan fan ***

I don't know if this e-mail will get to Mr. Bataan, but at least I will share my story with someone
connected to the "the one and only Latin King, Joe Bataan".
I'm 52yrs old and I stumbled across Singing Some Soul, back when I was in high school, and the rest
is history... From that point on I started collecting everything on vinyl that I could find. I ply Congas
and Joe's music has been very inspirational to me !  My high school sweetheart and I have been
married 32yrs. There was no question that our wedding song would be " MY CLOUD"
I just purchased his new CD" The Message" and as I expected it is a blessing that he sounds
better than ever... I went on his website and to my surprise, I still thank my lord Jesus Christ, that
Joe has a live DVD in San Francisco !!!! Trust me I would have paid more than the asking price to
have this treasure !!
All these years I have never had the pleasure to see him perform live... However I will get my
chance on May 6th, at the Santa Fe Spring Swap Meet !!!
Joe, God has truly blessed you. Thank you for your music contribution in my life time !!
Sincerely,
Bob in San Diego
1974 San Francisco gig band member
I found his one hazy photo which I scanned. It's our rehearsal for
the 1974 gig in San Francisco.  Joe Bataan is standing in front of
the stage facing the band. I'm the trombone player furthest to the
right. The keyboard player(White t-shirt on the left facing back)
was Phil Roa. Last I heard he was teaching music. The tenor sax
player is Jim Urkel. I saw him couple years back. He is a very in
demand woodwind studio player, Dwight Carroll and the Drummer
John Martinez Jr. Don't remember the rest of the band.
The thing I remember about the gig is Joe's fans.. They went wild
which startled us for a moment but by the end of the first song
we were in to it.  In 1975 I stopped playing gigs. I went back to playing for several years with a band
in LA called the Sedillo Brothers. I play trombone, harmonica, congas, bongos and wrote and
arranged all the horn charts for the Sedillo Brothers.
Now, besides my full time job I write music.
Charles in LA
I have grown up on Joe Bataan's music and was always partial to the "Original" sounds of My
Cloud, Ordinary Guy, What good is a Castle, etc. Hearing those songs always reminded me of
growing up in the Housing Projects on the Lower East Side, spraying fire hydrants, waiting for the
jazz-mobile to come into my neighborhood on hot summer nights, all good memories and at some
level Joe Bataan was part of that through his music. I know it sounds corny but it is true.
Back in 2001 my wife asked me if I wanted to see Joe Bataan "up on 110th Street" for her birthday,
Hell Yeah I wanted to see Joe Bataan.  It was GREAT, it was as if Joe was singing just for my wife &
I.  Although I can't sing " A Lick" there I was up front and center singing along with Joe Bataan.
After performing Joe came out to speak to the audience and I brought a particular photo of him
from his album Afro-Philipino- (one of my favorites) and he autographed if for me.  My wife and I
spoke with Joe for a while and not only could he sing he was a really nice guy.  That was one night
which I will treasure always, the night I met Joe Bataan.

Joe Bataan formed his band in 1965 and began recording in 1967 with
"Gypsy Woman"
Joe Bataan was the one who originated soul Latin New Yorker who was
developed in parallel with the Latin bugalu and anticipated music disc. Its
musical experience began with doo-wop street in the Fifties and got to
include one of the first recordings of rap that reached charts, the " Rap,
Clap-O" of 1979
Mr. New York is back!   "Ordinary Guy" "Gypsy Woman" "What Good Is A
Castle" "Under the Street Lamp" "La Botella" are just some of his many hits!
After a gap of 20 years, Bataan is back with an album recorded in New York,
on which time seems to have stood still.  We're back in 1969 !   Peace,
Friendship, Solidarity
